Why cross the street
  • if you've never played a CRPG or a D&D game
  • if you think turn-based combat is boring
  • if you want a game that actually reacts to your choices

You’ve heard of Dungeons & Dragons. You probably think of it as the thing nerds do in basements with dice and character sheets and twenty-minute arguments about whether a goblin can see in the dark. You are not wrong. But Baldur’s Gate 3 took that system — the dice, the sheets, the arguments — and built the most reactive, alive, genuinely surprising game of the last decade around it.

Every choice matters. Not “choose A or B for a slightly different cutscene” matters. Actually matters.

You walk into a camp and meet a goblin who used to be your enemy. You can kill her. You can talk to her. You can recruit her. You can fall in love with her. You can fall in love with her and then discover something about her that makes you question everything. The game doesn’t have a “good path” and an “evil path.” It has a your path, and the game is paying attention to what that is, and the characters around you react accordingly.

The combat is turn-based, which you think you hate. Trust it. It’s not a waiting simulator — it’s a puzzle. Every fight is a spatial problem: where do I stand, what do I interact with, can I push this enemy off a cliff, can I set this floor on fire and make them walk through it? The environmental creativity is the point. You’re not selecting “attack” from a menu. You’re solving a violent little puzzle, and the solution space is enormous.

And it’s co-op. You can play the entire game — all 100+ hours — with a friend, each controlling characters in the same party. The conversations become arguments. The decisions become negotiations. It’s the best co-op experience in gaming because it’s not a co-op mechanic bolted onto a single-player game — it’s a game designed around the idea that two people might disagree on what to do next.

You don’t know what a d20 is. Doesn’t matter. You will by hour three, and you’ll love it.
