“It's the fastest, smartest FPS ever made, and it thinks you can keep up.”

Risograph interpretation of Doom Eternal
Why cross the street
  • if you love COD but want something faster and smarter
  • if you think the FPS genre peaked at Modern Warfare
  • if you want a game that treats you like you're good at games

You think you know shooters. You’ve played COD for years. You know the recoil patterns, the map rotations, the time-to-kill. You’re good at them. Here’s the thing:

Doom Eternal is going to make you feel like you’ve never played one before.

This is not a shooter where you hide behind cover and pop out to take shots. This is a shooter where the cover is a trap and standing still is death. The game’s core loop — the “Dance” — is a rhythm: shoot demons with the rifle to build damage, flame-belch them to get armor, chainsaw them for ammo, glory-kill them for health. You’re constantly cycling through weapons and abilities not because you want to, but because the game demands it. Run out of ammo? You can’t reload — you have to chainsaw a demon. Low on health? You have to get close and tear one apart with your bare hands. The game pushes you toward aggression at all times, and the skill ceiling is so high you’ll still be improving fifty hours in.

The mastery curve is the same one you chase in competitive multiplayer — the flow state, the perfect run, the moment where everything clicks and you’re untouchable — except it’s against the game itself, not other players. And the game is a better opponent than any twelve-year-old on voice chat will ever be.

It’s also funny. Not “gamer humor” funny. Actually funny, in a deranged, heavy-metal, self-aware way that knows exactly how ridiculous it is and leans into it so hard it becomes sincere. The soundtrack — Mick Gordon’s industrial metal — is welded to the combat in a way that makes every fight feel like a music video you’re directing in real time.

You think FPS peaked at Modern Warfare. Play two hours of this and you’ll realise the genre had another gear you never found.
